Men’s soccer falls short to Loggers

Linfield men’s soccer came so unlucky with a 2-1 defeat from Puget Sound of Tacoma, Washington. Another weekend gone and still no clear three points for the Wildcats after six games played into the season.

Goals from Puget Sound came in the first and second half while Linfield’s only goal came in 10 minutes before normal stoppage time by Brain DeGrandmont, ’17. All goals scored were unassisted as we saw defenses from both teams being caught off guard. Ezra Kraus of Puget Sound saw the net first just 15 minutes left in the opener, netting  from inside the18 on the right side with a wonderful kick straight back into the nets.

Wildcats came into the second half with great hopes of equalizing the score on the board to 1-1. In the 61st minute we saw Rhys Lendio, ’17 and DeGrandmont develop an offensive play that nearly resulted into a goal. Not long after came a shot on target for the Wildcats. But Brandon Reyes of the Loggers was able to score a second goal for the visitors. This was some slight mistake from the Wildcats defense failing to clear the ball soon in time.

“Coming into the game today we knew it was a game that we could win. Every game that we’ve played in this conference this year has been competitive and we have had our chances to score. We just need to put more shots in the back of the net,” said Jake Smith, ’17.

Now 2-0 down for the home team and only less than 15 minutes left in play, the wildcats need two goals to push it to overtime. DeGrandmont scores the first goal and now the Wildcats need another goal to record perhaps another straight draw in the season. That was it, and the final whistle goes leaving the Wildcats shocked at the results.

“At the end of the day if you don’t shoot you don’t score. We missed a lot of opportunities and we were easily the better team on the field. It’s hard to lose when you are capable of winning the game with clear opportunities. Other than that this team looks to the next game without thinking too much about our past, which is good. We are a team that is much better than what our record shows,” said Isaia Flores, ’20

The Linfield Wildcats will continue to chase their first win as they face Willamette, at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. This is going to be the third consecutive game for the Wildcats playing a home.
