The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is planning on constructing major changes to the intersection of highway 99W and highway 18 east of McMinnville. This would impact those who are trying to drive to places like Newberg or Portland.

The planned changes would affect driving on the highway and side roads, but the construction would cause major impacts. While ODOT will minimize road closures, two closures of highway 18 will be needed to construct a roundabout.

Highway 18 runs south of McMinnville and past Dayton. It connects with highway 99W after it runs through Lafayette. Many students, faculty and staff use highway 18 to drive to Portland. Its closure also may increase traffic on highway 99W in McMinnville.

The construction would affect four areas, according to ODOT. The intersection of NE McDougall Rd. and 99W would be permanently closed and a new intersection would be constructed. Turning lanes will be added to NE Stoller Rd. and 99W. Finally, a roundabout would be built for the intersection of highway 18, 99W and NE McDougall Rd. These are subject to change.

The work is being done because the area has a history of crashes, ODOT said. There have been nine fatal crashes in the vicinity since 2019. 

The start date for the construction is sometime in 2027 as there is no set construction schedule, according to ODOT, Construction is expected to conclude in 2028. Those who are looking to submit feedback can do so by filling out a form.
