Curtin closes on Dressel as LCS director

Brianne Ries

A move to Cozine Hall  isn’t the only makeover Campus Safety received
recently; on Nov. 9, the department named a new interim director of campus safety. William Curtin replaced former director   Mike Dressel this week.

According to a reliable anonymous source, Dressel was fired from his previous position but is still working on campus for Auxiliary Services.

Numerous administrators declined to comment.

Curtin is no stranger to campus safety. From January 1987-1991, he was the director of community safety at Reed College. He moved to Lewis & Clark College in 1991, where he was the director of campus safety until 2006. Before his work in the campus safety field, he worked in private security and crime investigation at Legacy Emanuel Hospital from 1981-1987.

For the past two years, he said, he was a consultant to assess public safety at a number of colleges on the West Coast and some in theMidwest.

Curtin said he was contacted by Linfield to preside over the current transition between directors and that  he will remain at Linfield until the end of the academic year.

He said his impression of Linfield has been good so far.

“It’s only been three days, but it’s good,” he said. “There are some good people here, and this is a safe campus.”

Curtin also said he was impressed by the campus’s low crime rate, with only  small crimes such as bike thefts.

One piece of advice he gives to students: Don’t leave your laptops unattended.

The new director was a surprise to students and administrators.

Dressel, a Linfield alumnus, has worked at Linfield since 1997, beginning in the Facility Services department and eventually becoming director of LCS.

Dressel could not be reached for comment, but an auto e-mail response said he has been reassigned and students should call the Campus Safety number for assistance.

LCS can be reached by dialing campus (503) 883-7233.
