Students explore a new aspect of visual culture

Yin Xiao – Culture editor. Melanie Pullen, Holly Andres, New Catalogue, Daniel Hoyt, Darien Revel and Alex Lim are featured in Fashion & Fiction, an exhibit aimed at teaching students about fashion photography.
Todd Johnson, guest curator, said that the exhibition comprises a mix of fine-art photographers and commercial fashion photographers. It examines the intersection of contemporary photography and traditional fashion photography theories, he said in an e-mail.
Fashion & Fiction indicates the relationship between fashion photography and use of fiction story lines.
“You can feel photographers create scenes of fiction as story lines of these images, and characters in the images acting,” Cris Moss, gallery director and adjunct professor of art and visual culture, said. “But it means different things for individuals.”
“[Images] are very easy to understand: We see people acting, and expand on what they act,” sophomore Josie Silberbach said. “It’s contrasting fashion photographs from photographers.”
“Scared eyes of a little girl in the mirror, unique lights in the room and two different phone booths: They all have been [built] as [elements] of scenes by photographers,” Moss said.
Johnson said in an e-mail that Linfield has a strong, dynamic curatorial program, reminiscent of the Portland art community. The exhibition and gallery provide educational resources for any department of Linfield and even the general public.
The exhibition runs until March 13. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Contact Moss at [email protected] for additional information.
