Linfield College is now a member of the 2008 President’s Higher Education Service Honor Roll for exemplary service in the community.
“It is a great honor for our college,” Community Service Coordinator Jessica Wade said.
Launched in 2006, this is an annual program of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the U.S.
Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
The program is designed to promote the historic civic mission and to increase public awareness about college students’ contributions within their local communities and across the country.
“This is the first time Linfield College has made it on the list,” Wade said.
Wade said she collected and compiled all the data of every community service program on campus in 2007 to 2008 and applied to The Corporation for National & Community Service in September 2008.
Linfield students have performed 19,500 community service hours for Habitat for Humanity, campus-community partnerships to end homelessness, local schools service and the KidFit program. The Corporation for National and Community Service says the purpose of being a member of
the honor roll is “to help the institution recruit students, to earn the recognition as a service leader in the community, to garner additional community partnerships, to demonstrate a commitment to strengthening the community and to fulfill the civic mission.”
“About 40 percent of Linfield students engaged in the community through classes, Greek life and special categories,” Wade said.
She highlighted the program targeting disadvantaged youth on campus and in partnership with the community.
Wade said Linfield is one of nine colleges and universities in Oregon that have been honored this year.
Her message to every Linfield student who did the community service is congratulations.
She said looking at the goal for community service that President Obama has set, she wants to see more people in community service during his time as a president.
“I hope that we can continue to receive this honor,” Wade said.
