On April 25, Linfield students gathered for the annual Greek Week lip sync competition, where fraternities and sororities went head-to-head with choreographed performances after only about a week of prep. The crowd was loud, the energy was high and somehow both groups managed to look way more put-together than anyone expected given the short rehearsal time. In the end, Pike and Alpha Phi were announced as the winners after a close competition.
Despite having only about a week to prepare, both groups delivered performances that appeared well-rehearsed and engaging. There were coordinated dances, themed costumes and enough stage confidence that it was easy to forget how quickly everything had been put together. Alongside the performances, attendees also contributed canned food donations and recyclables, adding a community service aspect to the event. Proceeds from the bottle and can drive will go toward a Fraternity and Sorority Life scholarship, while food donations were given to the campus food pantry.
Pike and Alpha Phi leaned fully into a 2016 Super Bowl theme, complete with Bruno Mars music, matching outfits and very synchronized choreography. The routine was well structured, and fun to watch, noticing who fully memorized the choreography and which brothers were more focused on enthusiasm rather than choreography.
“As soon as we heard the theme was 2016, we immediately knew we wanted to recreate the 2016 Super Bowl halftime show,” said Alpha Phi member Miki Dunham. “It’s such an iconic performance with high energy, recognizable music and bold choreography, which made it the perfect fit for a lip sync competition.”
Behind the scenes, the event required far more planning than most people realized. “There were many meetings trying to get this event up and running. Lots of trials and errors,” said Sophia Dunckel, Public Relations Director for the Linfield Panhellenic Council. “There’s so much time and energy that goes into events like this.” According to Dunckel, the goal of the event goes beyond competition. “The overall goal is to bring Greek life together to strengthen bonds between chapters,” she said, adding that this year’s strong participation from both the crowd and chapters contributed to a particularly successful event.
Kirsten Deedon, Programming and Education Officer for the Linfield Panhellenic Council, had a similar comment, emphasizing the event’s focus on connection and collaboration.
“Greek Week, and especially the lip sync competition, is about more than just performance,” Deedon said. “It’s about collaboration, creativity and supporting one another.”
Even with a short preparation window, teams still managed to deliver performances that looked well-rehearsed and energetic. The event highlighted not only the creativity and effort of the participating chapters, but also the strong sense of community surrounding Greek Week at Linfield.
