While April brings an uprise in sunny days and blooming flowers, many people globally are excited for the celebration on the 20th day of the month. “4/20” is an annual tradition commemorating cannabis and the culture it brings.
The term “420” was coined in 1971 by five friends; Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz and Mark Gravich. They used the time, 4:20 p.m., as a secret code for when to meet and what they were doing (hint hint). But it wasn’t until Reddix mentioned the term to Phil Lesh, founding member of the popular group the Grateful Dead, that the term quickly spread beyond to the group’s fan-base and became an unofficial holiday celebrated on April 20.
Large celebrations from San Francisco to Amsterdam are held every 4/20 providing marijuana enjoyers with a space to connect. Events such as these offer live music, a sense of community and of course, Mary Jane.
If you are unable to make it to a formal celebration this year but still want to enjoy the holiday, listening to good celebratory music may just do the job. To help with this, we have compiled a list of some of the best and most popular songs for the holiday.
“Because I Got High” by Afroman
A true classic that is in most Spotify smoke sesh playlists.
“Young, Wild & Free” by Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa
Another popular song, however, surprisingly few know it is from Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa’s movie, “Mac and Devin Go To High School”. Definitely a must watch if you can this 4/20.
“Habits (Stay High)” by Tove Lo
A radio classic that hits the hardest in the car with all of the windows down.
“Sativa” by Jhené Aiko & Swae Lee
This song went crazy on early Tik Tok
“High All The Time” by 50 Cent
A personal favorite of mine.
“Bowl For Two” by The Expendables
In case you are celebrating this 4/20 with a companion, “Bowl For Two” is a chill song with a great beat!
Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty and the heartbreakers
Another timeless classic!
“Smoke two joints” by Sublime
Had to give Sublime a spot on the list!
“L$D” by A$AP Rocky
While this one isn’t about weed specifically, it has a strong feel-good vibe like no other.
And of course in honor of a true stoner legend and for the day itself,
“420 (Blaze Up)” bySnoop Dogg, Devin The Dude, Wiz Khalifa and DJ Battlecat
No matter if you spend this 4/20 at a festival, with friends or simply alone, good music is always a safe and festive route that ensures a good time!

While I am not a self-professed stoner myself, I think Ben Harper’s “Burn one down” warrants inclusion on this list. I specifically recommend the live version at Bonnaroo 2002, featuring amazing drumming from Leon Mobley.
