Angel’s top five best Halloween candies

Angel Rosas, Features Editor

Candy. It is truly my Achilles heel – that and most foods if I am being honest. And for the month of October–it was never just about Halloween night, people–I can gorge myself on copious amounts sugar, and no one can say anything about it.

But if for some cruel reason my lavish lifestyle of candy consumption was limited to only five name-brand sweets, then these are the ones that would make my list.

As my number five pick I have Nerds. This tiny cardboard box filled with brightly colored sugar bits makes me feel limitless. The crunch and taste of these things are unlike any other candies on this list.

When you heard the rattle of these gifts from above in your pillowcase/candy bag on Halloween night it was clear that you were in for a great night.

Number four pick is a tie–remember this is my list–between two great combinations of chocolate and peanuts: Peanut M&Ms and Reese’s Peanut Butter cups. Where Peanut M&Ms are extraordinarily simple and extremely addictive, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are a staple of the season.

My number three choice might cause some intense controversy among our readership. However, I knew that coming in to taking and writing this story, and I am ready for the backlash. My unexpected number three pick has to be Almond Joys. I can feel you cringing at my decision. I will admit this choice is has a very personal story.

I always felt bad for the little guy, the loner that most people would consider the loser, and in the terms of name-brand candy, that would be Almond Joys. I ate so many of my siblings’ leftover Almond Joys in solidarity that I grew a love for this candy, and that is why it stole the number three spot.

At number two is not only a great candy, but it is also the catalyst of multiple of my childhood friendships. I am of course talking about those bright red packaged, chocolate-covered wafer bars that we call KitKats. KitKats are a masterpiece and a triumph in design and structure. Not only were they perfectly created, but they also have the exact chocolate-to-wafer ratio that most people do not notice because that is how perfect it truly is. Lastly, it gives you the opportunity share the heavenly joy with another human.

My last pick goes to the one and only Snickers chocolate bar. These things are the embodiment of childhood bliss. The base starts with a layer of nougat, which is topped with caramel and peanuts dressed up and kept together with a layer of chocolate. It literally has so much in terms of texture and flavor, but it works like a beautifully conducted orchestra.
