Zero Waste McMinnville looking for volunteers for UFO Festival

Angel Rosas, Staff writer

Zero Waste McMinnville is seeking volunteers to help with waste sorting at the 19th annual UFO Festival on May 18 and 19, the McMinnville Scottish Festival on June 9 and 10 and Compostpalooza on June 16.

Zero Waste McMinnville is a non-profit organization that’s goal is to educate community members to make McMinnville the first city in Oregon to divert 90 percent of its waste from the landfill by 2024.

Zero Waste McMinnville has been volunteering at the UFO Festival since 2015.  Shifts are characterized into different sections along 3rd Street where volunteers will collect and sort all the waste from the event and then put waste into three distinct categories that include: recyclables, trash and compostables.

“Our dedicated volunteers enjoy teaching community members about where their waste goes since we started in 2014,” said Beth Rankin, who is the head of marketing for Zero Waste McMinnville.

“We like to take part in these events we have coming up while experiencing what it feels like to be part of an organization that is working to create positive change for waste management in McMinnville,” Rankin said.
