The Linfield global languages and culture studies department will host a screening of “Never Give Up!” a documentary about the life of civil rights lawyer Minoru Yasui and his work to defend the rights of Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II.

The screening will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 27 in Delkin Recital Hall.

“Never Give Up!” is part one of documentarian Holly Yasui’s film about her father. It tells the story of His life growing up in Hood River and becoming the first Japanese American attorney in Oregon.

During World War II, Yasui challenged the U.S. government’s incarceration of more than 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry.

The film details his own experience of imprisonment, including nine months in solitary confinement.

This screening will also include a preview of part two, which examines Yasui’s postwar life and further civil rights work.

Minoru Yasui was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and in 2016, the Oregon state legislature voted to declare March 28 Minoru Yasui Day in Oregon.

Holly Yasui will hold a Q&A session following the screening.
