Hunger, Homelessness week designed to educate students

The Linfield Change Corps will be holding a hunger and homelessness week at Linfield from Nov. 14-22.

This year, the hunger and homelessness week is being coordinated by sophomore Kelly Ackerman.

Ackerman is from Redmond, Oregon, and majors in Anthropology and is minoring in Spanish.

She took this job because she was impacted by her experience during Alternative Spring Break in McMinnville last year.

Ackerman wishes to help out on a larger scale by organizing events.

The week is designed to serve as a way to educate and bring awareness of hunger and homelessness around the country.

The week will also educate the Linfield community on what the roots and causes of Hunger and Homelessness are.

Ackerman strongly encourages all members of the Linfield community to attend the week’s planned events.

“[Coming] is a great way to meet other people with similar interests about wanting to help others. It is also a fun way to learn about the problems outside of the Linfield circle and the community we live in,” Ackerman said.

“[The week] helps bring knowledge about people in need and how we can help improve their lives,” Ackerman said.

The week begins with a morning of service on Nov. 14 at the co-op in McMinnville to help serve those in need of a hot meal.

Following the day of service, there will be a trivia night in Riley 201 on Nov. 16. The game will be played in the style of  “the Price is Right.” The grand prize will be a $50 donation to a local non-profit organization of the winner’s choice approved by the director.

On Nov. 18 there will be another opportunity to help those in need of a hot meal by volunteering at  the St. Barnabas Soup Kitchen.

Finally, on Nov. 19, there will be a Birdhouse painting in Riley 201, with a $4 cost that will go to YCAP.

There will also be a food drive throughout the week with bins located in Potter, Jane Failing, Mahaffey, Pioneer and Dillin halls as well as in Fred Meyer Lounge.
