Linfield athletics was in full swing this past week with the volleyball, soccer and tennis teams in action.
Men’s soccer fell to Whitman College 1-0 on Saturday. Sophomore Kevin Serrano got the lone goal of the match for Whitman. The Wildcats lacked any shots on goal the entire match, while Whitman had five.
Sunday, the Wildcats faced Whitworth University but fell 1-0. The lone goal was from graduate student Dominic Gusman. The Wildcat attack improved from Saturday, with two shots on goals compared to Whitworth’s five.
The team sits at 0-4 in conference play and 0-8 overall, last in the Northwest Conference (NWC). They will next host Willamette University on Oct. 1.
Women’s soccer fared better, taking Whitman to a 1-1 draw Saturday. Sophomore Erisa Baba scored early for Whitman, but senior Jenna Stanley scored her third goal of the season late in the second half to equalize the score. Stanley was assisted by senior sport management and economic major Mia Curtaz, who leads the NWC with four assists this season.
They then notched another tally to the win on Sunday, beating Whitworth 2-0. The Wildcats got out to an early lead off an own goal two minutes into the game. Senior sports management major Lize Rendon scored her fifth goal of the season with an assist by sophomore exercise science major Marley Ells. Rendon currently sits second in the NWC in goals scored and points, with 11. Points is a statistic that combines a players goals total and assists total, with goals being worth two points and assists one.
They sit at 2-0-1 in conference play and 5-0-3 overall, sitting at fourth place in the conference. They next host Willamette on Oct. 1.
Volleyball had two games this weekend, dropping the opener to Whitworth 3-2. The match remained close, with the last three sets being decided by three points or less. Junior political science and psychology major Nora Myre led the teams in kills with 18 and aces with two. Sophomore biochemistry and molecular biology major Madison Millard led in blocks with nine, while sophomore nursing major Pi’ilani Hirahara led in assists with 23. Freshman business major Naia Alefaio-Foifua led the team in digs with 21.
Saturday’s match against Whitman went much better for the Wildcats, winning 3-1. The match was far from a blowout however, as every set was decided by less than three points. Myre again led in points with 17 and aces with 3. Sophomore biomedical science major Katelyn Mawdsley led in blocks with 4. Hirahara led in assists with 23 while Alefaio-Foifua led in digs with 20.
The volleyball team currently sits at 2-1 in league play and 4-4 overall. They next host Willamette University on Sept. 30.
Men’s golf competed in St. Cloud, Minn. Sept. 20-21. Junior accounting major Douglas Bailey shot a 147 (+3) to finish 20th. Sophomore Ryder Nyg shot 152 (+8) to finish 43rd. Freshman Brody Landaker shot 154 (+10) to finish in 51st, freshman Timothy Morach shot 156 (+12) and got 61st. Senior sports management major Kellen Hudson rounded the team out, shooting 157 (+13) to finish 68th. The Wildcats finished 12th overall.
They next play at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational in DuPont, Wash. on Sept. 29-30.
The women’s golf team was in action as well, as they played Orange and Black Invitational in Tualatin, Ore. Freshman Kariss Whitford led the team shooting 171 (+27) to finish 14th. Freshman Sophia Hamilton shot 180 (+36) to take 18th, freshman Breleigh Garcia shot 182 (+38) to take 21st, freshman Addison Nations shot a 202 (+58) to take 23rd and freshman Ainsley Kelley rounded the team out shooting 214 (+70) to finish 25th. The team finished fourth overall.
They will next see action on Sept. 29-30 in DuPont Wash. at the Pacific Lutheran Invitational.
