On April 12, Linfield’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity chapter (Pike) hosted their tenth annual “Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes.” The event is in association with Henderson House for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Henderson House is a local organization that advocates and supports survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Yamhill County.
During the “Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes” event, the brothers of Pike walk and run around the academic quad in high heels. While the baseline was four laps, spectators could donate $10 to pick a specific brother to complete another lap — a donation of $75 results in another lap for all the brothers.
While it can be comical watching fraternity members try to manage the art of walking in heels, this fundraiser has a serious objective. Through the event, Pike aims to increase awareness and support for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. To the Pike brothers, supporting this cause means a lot.
“This particular philanthropy is one of the main reasons that I wanted to join this fraternity,” said freshman Pike member JR Mulvenna. “Coming from a family where many people were affected, and as one myself, I deeply resonate with the cause Pike is trying to help.”
This passion for their philanthropy was not lost on the spectators watching the brothers trip, limp and twist their ankles. Community members and supporters of Henderson House held up signs sporting phrases such as “strut for survivors” and “real men wear heels” to cheer them on.
“It’s awesome that so many guys can get together to support survivors and be so passionate about their mission,” said spectator junior Sophia Kleckner. “It’s great that they can put their egos aside and wear some heels.”

Over the past decade, they have raised over $60,000 for Henderson House, helping fund support groups, shelters and prevention education for survivors.
“We as a fraternity strive to make lasting impacts on the Linfield and McMinnville community to ensure that domestic and sexual assault survivors are heard and supported,” said Pike President Radule Bozovic.
This year, Pike raised $3,000 in support of Henderson House. Pike intends to continue the “Walk-a-Mile” tradition and continue to support domestic and sexual violence survivors.
