As the air becomes crisper and you can’t decide whether a t-shirt or a rain jacket is appropriate for the day, you know you are in for a charming fall season. While many prefer the summertime due to the beaches, bonfires and boats, there are plenty of fall activities that provide just as much joy and add to the comfort of the season.
When asked about her favorite fall activity, junior Liberty Domingo expressed her love of trying the fall Starbucks menu. Lucky for her and all the other Starbucks fans at Linfield, we have one right on campus.
On Aug. 22, Starbucks dropped their limited-time fall food and drinks. The food includes the pumpkin cream cheese muffin, baked apple croissant, raccoon cake pop and mummy-decorated sugar cookie. The drinks include but are not limited to the pumpkin spice latte, pumpkin cream cold brew, iced pumpkin cream chai and apple crisp macchiato. With the variety, one must try all the menu items before they disappear, not to be seen again until next year.
Domingo’s favorite fall menu item is the iced pumpkin cream chai, a drink released last year after customer request. While some may not consider going to Starbucks an activity, sometimes simply getting a coffee is all the activity you need on a cozy fall day.
One of the most classic aspects of fall in America are the football games. Whether you watch it on TV or attend the Wildcat games, football is strongly associated with the season. This aspect of fall is JAMS professor Kevin Curry’s favorite, especially going to Wildcat games.
“It’s a great outdoor activity where people get together once a week,” Curry said, “I like attending other sports, but with football, you want to go and watch every single one.”
“Caturday” is full of excitement with the fun on Streak Street and the competitive atmosphere created by players and passionate fans. The red and orange leaves surrounding the stadium and the crisp air create a perfect opportunity to wear your favorite Wildcat sweatshirt. You can make the day even better by stopping for a fall drink at Starbucks on your way to the game.
In addition to football games, Curry mentioned that when fall rolls around, he looks forward to wearing beanies. While wearing a beanie may not exactly be an activity, I’d say walking around showing off your favorite accessory still counts. If you happen to see Curry sporting a beanie at a football game, know he must be in an autumn paradise.
Of course, it wouldn’t be fall without Halloween. This is why sophomore Molly Gregory’s favorite fall activity is the Bella Organic Farms Haunted Corn Maze on Sauvie Island. Through the corn maze, creatures such as ghouls, goblins, zombies and a crazed farmer armed with a chainsaw stalk and scare you until you find your way out. Good luck if you make it to the room of dolls or the butcher shop.
“The second you enter, to the moment you leave the actors are on you,” Gregory said.
This is her favorite activity in the fall because it is well worth the money. It is an actual maze that you can get lost in and the costumes and sets are of amazing quality. This specific haunted corn maze is open every Friday and Saturday of October from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Pricing varies depending on the night.
For some, fall is a magical time. Stepping on crunchy leaves or wearing their favorite sweater might make this their favorite time of year. For those who are disappointed about the changing seasons and missing summer, it is important to remember that summer doesn’t get all the fun. There is so much beauty and joy that fall and its activities bring that we should enjoy it while we have it. After all, fall only comes once a year.
