Wildcats dropped by boxers, draw with bruins
October 22, 2017
The men’s soccer team fought through rainy weather, but were unable to get a win this weekend, losing 4-1 to Pacific and battling a 1-1 draw with George Fox.
Pacific took control of both sides of the ball during Saturday’s meeting, scoring three goals in the second half and allowing Linfield just two shots on goal the entire game.
The Boxers’ Weli Alamillo opened up the scoring at the back end of the first half with a penalty kick goal at the 42:24 mark. It was his fourth goal of the season.
After one half, the score was 1-0.
The Boxers wasted no time in the second half, immediately putting pressure on the Wildcat defenders.
They struck again nearly three minutes into the second half, at 47:47, when Peter Vizzoni ran down the right side of the field and found the back of the net from 10 yards out.
The Wildcats had their chances at scoring. Luke Marks, ’21, attempted a header that went high. It followed by another shot on goal by Malachi Stalberg, ’20, that was saved by the Boxers’ goalkeeper, Leyton Thommasen.
“It was an ugly game with plenty of chances,” said Henry Rosenfeld, ’20. “Unfortunately, we made some mistakes that they capitalized on.”
Pacific added on to their lead with goals by Matt Kimball, 50:13, and Robert Nurmi, 63:49. It was their sixth and fourth goals of the season, respectively.
It wasn’t until 85:14 on the clock that Dayton Farrow, ‘21, found Rosenfeld, who scored the Wildcats’ first and only goal of the game.
Sunday’s game went a lot different.
The Bruins scored first with a goal late in the half at 37:24.
Ryan Kister, ’21, scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season at 66:12, but the clock ran down and regulation ended.
After two 10-minute overtime periods, the score remained tied 1-1, resulting in a tie.
The Wildcats moved to 2-12-1 on the season and 0-10-1 in conference.
“This team is motivated by chemistry and our collective mindset to work for each other every game,” Rosenfeld said.
Up next, the team is scheduled to play Puget Sound 2:30 p.m. Oct. 28 in Tacoma.
