Track ’Cats win top honors at Icebreaker

The ’Cats had many top performances over the weekend at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker.
Wildcat top performers were senior Jeff Lieder, Kaelia Neal, Emma Knudson, junior Maddie Shirley, sophomore Baylie Cameron and the women’s 4×400 relay team made up of freshman Kristen Burke, Cameron, junior Mehana Sabado-Halpern and Taylor Petersen.
“As a team, I feel it was great opening meet for everyone to get back into the atmosphere. Personally, I was satisfied to see the hard work of pre-season paying off,” Cameron said.
Lieder threw a distance of 48 feet and 1.25 inches in the men’s shot put. Neal ran four minutes and 44.7 seconds in the women’s 1500-meters. Knudson ran her personal best in the women’s 10k in 37:19.4. Shirley jumped 17 feet, 4 inches in the women’s long jump. Cameron ran one minute and 5.79 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles. The women’s 4×400 relay team finished in 4:12.9.
Sabado-Halpern also nabbed secondary honors in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 1.5 inches and third place in the long jump.
Teammate Shirley did the same but in javelin with a throw of 170 feet and 9.5 inches. Lieder additionally placed eighth in the discus throwing 129 feet, 3 inches.
Seniors Jamie Rodden and Ana Ramirez and junior Courtney Beard and Olivia McDaniel all earned secondary honors.
Rodden, out of 18 competitors, ran a time of 2:24.04 in the women’s 800m. Ramirez ran a time of 12:20.07 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
Beard closely followed teammate Neal in the women’s 1500m in 4:51.6 seconds. McDaniel placed first among conference competitors with a vault of 11 feet and 3.75 inches.
Burke earned third in the women’s 400m hurdles in addition to her part in the 4x400m relay team.
Junior Joana Galli followed McDaniel in third place in the women’s pole vault flying 10 feet and 10 inches.
Sophomore Mackenzie Mize took third in the women’s discus throwing 116 feet and seven inches. Senior Kailey Wright threw 135 feet and six inches in the women’s hammer to earn her third place.
Newcomer Dana Brooks placed third in the women’s javelin with a throw of 129 feet and nine inches.
The Wildcats nabbed places fifth through eighth and tenth in the women’s 100m hurdles.
The ’Cats will compete again at 10 a.m Saturday, March 10, at the Pacific Invitational.
