Sustainability

Hey Linfield Wildcats,

Perhaps you are aware of the sustainability efforts going on around our campus, or perhaps you aren’t aware but would like to be? You’re in luck. This is one place to find out!

Our campus bookstore, managed by Barnes & Noble, has made strides to become more ecologically conscious by making efforts to sell sustainability based merchandise, and also by working with vendors committed to fair trade, ethical labor practices and sustainability.

Some of their merchandise includes reusable travel mugs, CFL light bulbs, recycled notebooks and paper, sustainable spirit clothing, recycled and reusable tote bags, and organic food and snacks.

Not only is quality merchandise important, but quality business practices as well.

Barnes & Noble is a part of the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and they require all vendors who supply products to their stores to adopt FLA’s code of conduct, which has strict rules for workers’ rights.

In upcoming years Barnes & Noble’s commitment to fair labor and sustainable standards will continue to be important and play a role in how they do business. They will continue to offer students products made by brands that work towards bettering their employees and the environment.

According to a recent survey, 58 percent of students said they would choose lower-priced apparel that was not sustainably made for its lower price, while 40 percent said they would choose the slightly more expensive sustainably made apparel.

It’s always exciting to hear about businesses and or efforts around campus that are more sustainably minded. Businesses such as Barnes & Noble can be role models and can make a difference by responding to student demands and providing good quality products without compromising the quality of the environment.

I challenge you all to keep your sustainability thinking caps on this week!
