French club hosts potluck, cooking competition

The French club held a dual potluck-cooking competition on Thursday, March 17.

The club asked members and anyone wanting to join to bring a dish to share with everyone. All who brought dishes were entered in the competition, which was voted on by all potluck attendees.

Several authentic French dishes were brought to the gathering. Two quiches of ham and cheese were served and devoured alongside fried vegetable baignés. For dessert, there was un gateau au chocolat, lemon bars and a delicious flan. These were all handmade by Linfield students and the French teaching assistant, Clement Hossaert.

There was also a portable stove with crepes being served, with the options of Nutella or jam for toppings.

Each potluck-goer, after sampling every dish–and more than sampling others–got to cast their vote in the ballot box for which dish they liked best.

The winning meal, to no one’s surprise, was the caramel flan prepared by Myrna Najera Perez, ‘18, the French club’s own president.

“I prepared a crème caramel and in the process I accidentally burned three fingers while prepping the sugar caramel,” Perez said. “As the French club president, it felt very rewarding to see the enthusiasm for the French week this year.”

This was the last event in a week’s worth of fun, all celebrating French culture in the best ways Linfield knows how.

“I think the event turned out fine,” said Hossaert. “A group of friends having a good time. Hopefully we’ll be able to do something with live music next time. The objective is to keep the French department present in people’s mind.”
