The lady wildcats started off slowly on a sunny Saturday afternoon on Oct. 3 against the visiting Lewis and Clark Pioneers in McMinnville.

The Pioneers looked strong during the first half of the game by battling and maintaining possession. Linfield had some issues maintaining possession in the first half and the Pioneers tried to capitalize but could not get a goal until later.

Before halftime, Ashlee McFall, ’17, kicked the ball over Lewis and Clark’s goalkeeper’s outstretched arms in the 27th minute to make the score 1-0.

In the 31st minute, Lewis and Clark answered with a goal of their own to make the game tied at 1-1. The Pioneers and Wildcats each had seven shots at halftime.

The second half went much smoother for the ’Cats. However, play was interrupted for nearly 20 minutes due to an injury on the field and play began again.

A shot was kicked and deflected off the crossbar but Rachel Gernhart, ’16, was present and able to finish on the right side to make the score 2-1.

Gernhart again scored, this time assisted by Jamie Mars, ’19. Mars crossed from the left side into the middle to Gernhart and seized the win by making the score 3-1.

Goalkeeper freshman Sarah Bailey tallied six saves for the Wildcats and registered the win for the day.

Linfield faced the Pacific University Boxers on Sunday, Oct. 4 in Forest Grove, Oregon.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, they went into overtime.

The first overtime was again, scoreless. They proceeded to a second overtime and in the 102nd minute; Pacific scored the golden goal to end the game 0-1.

This is only the second time Linfield has lost this season. Both teams were dead even on shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Sarah Bailey, ’19, registered three saves for the ’Cats. Both teams each earned three corner kicks, respectively.

Emma Vukic, ’16, said, “We played very well actually, just made the error in overtime and obviously golden goal is unforgiving.”

Yasmeen Ramos, ’19, said, “Overall, we had a strong performance and had strong possessions and our defense was strong as well as our offense creating a lot of opportunities for goals to be scored.”

Next up, the ’Cats are on the road to face Pacific Lutheran at noon on Saturday, October 10 and George Fox in Newberg on Sunday, October 11. Both games are set for noon.
